Butcher block cutting board - measures approximately 11" x 14" x 1-1/2", weighs roughly 3 lbs.  The cutting board receives a shou sugi ban treatment and is then "quenched" in coconut oil to preserve it further.  Shou sugi ban assists in protecting the wood from moisture and bacteria.

Shou sugi ban is the term commonly used in the West for yakisugi, an ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood with fire. Literally translating to “burnt cedar board” in English, shou sugi ban traditionally involves scorching wooden boards with a torch or controlled fire, cooling the wood, softening the char with a wire brush, removing dust, then, topping the wood with natural oil (in this case I use coconut oil).
